Golf at Parkmerced

Spring is in the air, and for most golfers that means watching the Masters Golf Tournament (which takes place April 4-10 this year) and getting ready for a long season of hitting the links. Residents of Parkmerced who love to golf will never have far to go for their tee times—our luxury living community is conveniently situated adjacent to the nationally renowned TPC Harding Park, San Francisco’s only city-owned public course managed by the official PGA Tour. Surrounded on three sides by Lake Merced, TPC Harding Park boasts two courses that are as beautiful as they are challenging.

The 18-hole Harding Park Course, originally designed by legendary architects Willie Watson and Sam Whiting in 1925, was renovated in 2005 to perfect its layout and construction for the PGA tour. The greens were extended by 400 yards and then completely upgraded in 2014, resulting in the one-of-a-kind course you’ll find there today.

The 9-hole, par 30 Fleming 9 Course, added to TPC Harding Park in 1961, offers a challenging alternative to the larger par 72 course with six par-3 and three par-4 holes that include a 405-yard opening hole. Club selection plays an important part in the successful completion of this advanced course, where accuracy is key and your long and short game skills will be tested equally.

Those looking to brush up on their game at TPC Harding Park can call upon the expertise of a Class “A” professional from the PGA of America for expert instruction on anything from full swings to mental preparation. Or, if you want to practice on your own, TPC Harding Park also features short game and full swing areas designed to provide ample options for perfecting your putting, chipping, bunker shot, and driving skills.

Golf for Kids

It is not just adults who can improve their game at TPC Harding Park. Educational opportunities for children and youth aged 6 to 17 are provided through the park’s participation in The First Tee of San Francisco. Established in 2004, the youth development program’s mission is to use the “principles of golf—discipline, hard work and integrity—to enhance the academic achievement and leadership skills of youth from all backgrounds.” Students attend courses twice a week both in the classroom and on the greens, where values related to the game of golf are taught to inspire a deeper appreciation for the game and provide tools for creating a healthier, happier life.

Golf Grub

A day of golf is sure to help you work up an appetite. Thankfully, TPC Harding Park has a fantastic selection of food available on site.

For a full-service experience, visit The Cypress Grill, an upscale eatery looking out over Lake Merced and offering selections from an acclaimed modern American menu. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, The Cypress Grill provides the perfect place to grab a bite with friends after a day on the driving range, and you could even host a business lunch here between rounds. Or, if you need a break before you’ve hit the halfway mark, you can make a brief pit stop at the Midway Grill, a quick-service alternative offering hot dogs, sandwiches, burgers, breakfast items, beers, sodas, and snacks. While the Midway Grill is open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., beverage cart service is available until 4:30 p.m.

For a round of drinks after a round of golf, be sure to check out Parkside Tavern at 1940 Taraval Street, which has a fantastic happy hour from 4-6 p.m. featuring $1 oysters and great offers on beer and wine. Hungry golfers can discuss their swings over a bar menu full of internationally inspired dishes. We recommend the fish tacos and the Bloody Mary oyster shooter with gremolata to reinvigorate you after a long day on the fairways. Or enjoy brunch at the Parkside Tavern, a great way to fuel up before an early tee time on the weekend. Dine on delicate eggs Florentine or the Tavern Irish Breakfast with all the fixings, and wash everything down with a bacon Bloody Mary before perfecting your putt on The Fleming 9-course.
